EXPERTS: please help: The only ISP in this place seems to block the VOIP services :(?
September 22, 2008 - I subscribed to a nice VOIP service (lowrate VOIP) when I lived in Germany. Now I moved to the Palestinian Territory and the greedy (and only) ISP in the "country" (who is sadly also the only telephone service provider, by the way) seems to have a block on VOIP services since I am not able to use my German Voip anymore (I keep getting this stupid message "Sorry: you are not allowed to make this call" everytime I try). My friends who traveled to other countries (like neighboring Jordan for example) were able to use their accounts there just fine. I hear that one can use things such as "proxy" to get around this blockage. I have never used such thing and dont even know how to use them or how to subscribe to them (not a computer guru, as u can tell). Also, is there cost associated with them or are there free ones?
For the sake of freedom of choice, please advise!
- Are you absolutely sure your ISP is blocking your VOIP connection. I would contact the VOIP & ISP companies first.
are you getting dial tone? can you call into the voip phone? I would find out which TCP/UDP your voip phone is using? and make sure those ports are un-blocked on your firewall? you can download a pack sniffer , if you have a span port configured on your switch , you can load a free sniffer called "wireshark" it's free, it will tell you if both in/out traffic is going to your phone company via IP. This will tell you if those ports are open and working.
Generally VoIP doesn't take much bandwidth, so I'm wondering if your ISP is blocking the German ISP or its servers or the German VoIP service is not available for your area? If you go with a proxy server I would suggest paying for a good service like the Anonymizer, https://www.anonymizer.com/consumer/products/ as you will get reliable, secure and faster connections then with public proxy servers. They have anonymous proxy web servers for about USD $29.99 a year. You might want to contact your German VoIP support and ask them if they have a work-around, another port for example, that you can try to bypass your current ISP block.
They're blocking VOIP so they can profit from the inconvenience. I'm sure your VOIP ports are blocked. There are several workarounds. Probably the simplest would be to use a dynamicDNS service. Instead of merely repointing your IP address, you can also remap ports (take your VOIP port from the DDNS server and map it to any unblocked port on your computer). The call goes to the DDNS server on the VOIP port, but is forwarded to/from your computer on an unblocked port). There is a fee for DDNS like this, but it's peanuts...
